I tried so many GIS applications on Ubuntu, but only these packages cover most of GIS applications, about 10 minutes depending on your internet connection and you can have a high-end GIS workstation built completely on Ubuntu. Here we go.

sudo apt-get -y install qgis grass qgis-plugin-grass mapserver-bin gdal-bin cgi-mapserver \
python-qt4 python-sip4 python-gdal python-mapscript gmt gmt-coastline-data \
r-recommended gpsbabel shapelib libgdal1-1.4.0-grass

You can also try an application called “Quantum GIS”, it has the ability to write plugins using the phyton programming language. You can download it from here.

I’m planning to take geographical information system as my major in university. What is GIS ?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information.

I think this is very interesting subject where computers studies and geography are meet.

Yesterday, I decided to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my aspire one. First, I download the remix image located here to my 1 GB flash drive following the instruction from here. I then rebooted with the flash drive plugged in and install it without any clicks or types. After 15 minutes the remix working on aspire one.

The Dekstop and Launchers

Everything is works out box, I can connect to the internet trough the wi-fi or ethernet, although the wi-fi indicator light doesn’t work. The only thing that didn’t work was the SD card reader on the right side (the one on left seems to work without problem), So it won’t be a problem for me.
